My father, who was a general surgeon, used to call one of his internal medicine buddies a “doctor’s doctor.” The guy other doctors go to when they need another opinion. Dad’s respect for his friend’s abilities pushed me toward internal medicine. But the most important philosophy of my father’s that I try to emulate is the desire to know each of my patients in great depth as a person.
